Turn of the century illustrated letter that shows the whimsical and popular fad of replacing words in the letters with drawings.
A wonderful art project, the story of which is in the Great Boston Arts web pages. There are three beautiful writing stations complete with stationery. You can sit and write letters and either leave them to be mailed or leave them there open to be read. Write to living people or dead, write the letter you always meant to write but didn’t. It’s a moving project. If you are anywhere near Boston, check it out and report back!
Way Stations: The Letter-writing Project
The contemporary artist Lee Mingwei has an interactive museum project that also has a web presence. His artwork reflects some of the philosophical concepts of Buddhism. Read about the Letter-writing Project and even participate.

- Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid
- The Love Letter
- Mistress and Maid
- Woman in Blue Reading a Letter
A painting by Gerard Ter Borch, which probably influenced Vermeer’s painting “A Lady Writing a Letter”.
